The DTA is a network of community practitioners. We help people set up development trusts, and we help existing trusts learn from each other and work effectively. We also influence government and others at national and local level, to build support and investment for our movement.
We are aiming for a successful development trust in every community. There are now over 450 development trusts in our membership, in both urban and rural areas. While many are still small, others are operating at scale: the combined income is over £260m and development trusts have £490m of assets in community ownership.
Development Trusts
Development trusts are community owned and led organisations. They use self-help, trading for social purpose, and ownership of buildings and land, to bring about long-term social, economic and environmental benefits in their community. They operate in both urban and rural areas, often in neighbourhoods which have experienced the worst economic decline. They are independent, but work with the public sector, private businesses, and with other community groups. They are community ‘anchor' organisations, delivering services and facilities, finding solutions to local problems, and helping other organisations and initiatives succeed.
At a regional level our work includes:
- facilitating regional networking
- taking part in regional policy on issues that are of concern to our members
- supporting emerging trusts as well as established trusts
- lobbying and campaigning to inform politicians and other policy makers
The work of the regional team centres on the four core values of the DTA; supporting existing member trusts, assisting additional communities who wish to consider the development trust approach, persuading others within the region of the value of the development trust movement and running the organisation within the region effectively. DTA staff in the south east support existing and emerging development trusts, as well as informing and supporting community and social enterprise development throughout our sector. The quarterly regional network meeting is a core component of our work. Networking, training and mentoring are our strengths.
DTA South East works in partnership regionally, sub regionally as well as locally. We work hard to provide our members with a voice in regional agencies as well as providing the voice of community enterprise to those involved in strategic work with both the regional development agency and with regional government office
